Chinese Symposium on Agricultural Geology
in Zibo, Shandong on Nov.8-11, 1997

The meeting was sponsored by the Agricultural Geology Professional Commission, Chinese Geology Association. About 70 Chinese geologists, geographers and agronomists attended the meeting, and 30 of them gave the scientific reports. The topic of the symposium is relationship between agriculture and geological environments.

Dr.Jiang Zhongcheng attended the symposium on behalf of Prof. Yuan Daoxian and gave a lecture on "Ecological Features and Harness of Environmental problems in Karst Stone Mountains of West-south China"

With bare rocks, well developed karst structure and calcium-rich background, karst stone mountains of southwest China have fragile environments and special plant ecology. The vegetation is characterized by calciphile, xerophyte and lithophyte, low ecological efficiency and special diverse species, but quite different in different karst geological regions. There are also a lot of good fruits and precious herb in karst mountain ranges. Therefore, to harness the fragile environments and rebuild the forest in karst stone mountains, the karst environmental features and ecological characters should be taken into consideration. Some successful experience shows that, it is a good way to build a stereo ecological agriculture by planting local precious herb , well-adjusted fruits and crops in different geomorphic positions and karst geological backgrounds. It is available to rebuild water source forest and construct methane-generating firstly, which can not only improve life conditions of local people, but also keep them away from chopping wood.
