PART V KARST SOILS-QUESTIONNAIRE
INTERNATIONAL GEOLOGICAL CORRELATION
PROGRAM
PROJECT #299:"GEOLOGY, CLIMATE, HYDROLOGYAND KARST
FORMATION" SUB-PROGRAM ON KARST SOILS - QUESTIONNAIRE
Dear Colleague
During the Guilin field seminar of 1991 the establishment of a new
sub-group on "Soil Formation in Karst Areas" was approved. The aims of this
sub-group are as follows:
1 Estimation of the age of palaeosols in karst areas using iron
crystallinity.
2 The classification of karst soils and the comparison of soil properties between karst
areas.
3 The effects of human activities on soil dynamics in karst areas.
This questionnaire is the first attempt by the sub-group to survey
karst soi ls globally. We hope to analyse the data supplied to address the following quest
ions:
1 What are the different kinds of soils on carbonate rocks and w hat is
t heir global distribution? What is the correlation of
those soil types with clima te and lithology?
2 What erosional processes are active on those karst soils, and how do those processes
relate to the karst environmental
complex defined by landforms, lithology, climate, vegetation and land use?
3. What are the limitations of these soils for vegetation growth and crop production?
We are aware that for some soils not all of the data will be available.
Just do the best you can. Hopefully this survey will identify deficiencies in our know
ledge which the IGCP #299 program can address in a second stage program. Please provide
data for one karst soil type on each form. Please photocopy the form for additional
datasets.
We hope to present the results from this survey at the IGCP #299
meeting in England in August next year. If possible, please return the completed forms to
David Gillieson at the following address by December 31st 1993.
