Karst environments are particularly complex and fragile and their study involves a wide range of scientists. In no other environment do the skills of the geomorphologist, geologist,hydrologist and hydrogeologist overlap to such a marked extent. The presence of caves which provide access to active and relict aquifers is a unique feature of karst environments and speleologists can provide invaluable insights to hydrogeological studies. Despite these obvious areas of overlap karst scientists have too often worked in isolation from each other , remaining within subject boundaries.

The purpose of this Symposium is to bring together scientists from all of the major international groups who have a concern for the hydrogeology and geomorphology of karst environments and for the conservation of these environments.

A personal invitation for participation in the Conference can be sent by the Organising Committee to help delegates raise travel funds or to obtain visas . It is not a commitment by the Organising Committee to provide financial support.

The Symposium will take the form of a series of one day paper sessions alternating with field excursions to representative areas in each of the major British limestone aquifers: the Cretaceous Chalk; the Jurassic Limestone; the Permian Magnesian Limestone and the Carboniferous Limestone karsts of the Mendip Hills , the Peak district and the Yorkshire Dales. The first week will be based at the University of Oxford and the second at the University of Huddersfeild.

The official Symposium language will be English and abstracts as well as papers will be required in English.

There will be a reception hosted by the University of Oxford; an afternoon tour of Oxford City and University; a trip by barge along the Huddersfield Canal including a traverse of the longest canal tunnel in Europe and a Conference Dinner at the University of Huddersfield. As the numbers will be limited it is not proposed to arrange a formal accompanying persons programme. However , there will be informal opportunities if required.

Accommodation will be in single study bedrooms and two room sets at Keeble College and the University of Huddersfield. These are within a few minutes walk of dining halls and lecture facilities. First class hotel accommodation will also be available but this is further from the Conference Centre and wil attract a supplement of about 40 per night.

Authors wishing to offer a paper/poster are requested to submit a title and brief summary with this circular by 31 July 1993. Full abstracts (one page A4 , camera ready) will be required with the second circular by 31 December 1993.These will be published and distributed to all delegates.Conference volumes will be published by the Zeitschrift fur Geomorphologie and Cave Science. The format will be circulated with the second circular.
