V.NEWS FROM SUB-GROUPS
SOIL FORMATION IN KARST AREA
(Kazuko Urushibara-Yoshino Japan)
The business meetings of IGCP 299 "Geology , Climate ,
Hydrology and Karst Formation" held at Guilin , Guangxi , China during the
field seminar from July 7 to Aug. 1st , 1991 , agreed upon the
establishment of new sub-group on "Soil Formation in
Karst Areas", which has been proposed by Kazuko
Urushibara-Yoshino, Japan, and David Gillieson, Australia.
The aims of the new sub-group are as follows:
(1) Estimation of the age of paleo-soils in karst
areas using iron crystalinities.
(2) The classification of paleo-soils which are estimated the ages by (1), and their
comparison of properties in the karst areas.
(3) Study on human activities on the soil formation in the karst areas.
For the classification of soils for (2), mainly the methods of FAO/UNESCO and
Soil Taxonomy will be used. If it is necessary, we have to use the other methods.

WORLD KARST MAP
Denes Balazs (Hungary)
The Hungarian group of IGCP 299 is working on a world-wide
inventary of karst areas and caves. It was compiled a form for obtaining numerical
data of karst regions and caves of different types and was sent about 80 countries and
karst researchers.
Obtaining data from smaller developed countries is relatively easy.
There are problems with the big "karst empires" as the United States and
the Soviet Union. In the US there is no central bureau of karst research , the data
are in hands of different individuals , universities , and hundreds of local caving
group of enthusiasts organized in "grottoes". But we got a valuable assistance
from Prof . William B ,White , Pennsylvania State University , participant in IGCP
299 , who organized also a working group from various parts of United States ,
and we hope , that the karst and caves inventary for US will be ready in this
year by help of the National Speleological Society. In the Soviet Union the
problems are similar , here we asked Prof.. K.A.Gorbunova , Perm University ,
and Prof. V. N Dublyansky , president of Karst Committee ,
Ukrainian Academy of Sciences , also participants of IGCP 299 ,
for mediation between the different karst institutions and
researchers in the USSR. The third biggest "karst-empire" is
China , but we got already the necessary informations from Prof. Yuan Daoxian , the
Institute of Karst Geology , Guilin. In these 3 countries are the 55% of the world
karst areas.
Before completing our karst data bank, we publish the questionary asking anybody to
help our work. In spite of our repeated request we did not get
answer from the following countries: Albania , Algeria , Australia ,
Belgium, Bolivia , Brazil , Burma, Colombia , Czechoslovakia , Denmark , Germany , Greece
, Guatemalam, Iran,Libya, Morocco , New Zealand ,Pakistan ,Poland ,Tunisia ,Venezuela.
Anybody are familiar with the karst areas of the above mentioned countries ,
are requested with grateful respects to help us with informations.
Please contact: Dr.Denes Balazs, H-2030, Erd, Sard utca 45, Hungary.
Many thanks for the helpful assistance.
