Sino-Japanese Joint Cave Expedition Announcement In accordance with the mutual intention of Guilin Institute of Karst Geology, Ministry of Land and Resources, and Expedition Department of Ritsumeikan University, the 5th Sino-Japanese Joint-expedition will be carried out in Leye County, Guangxi near the boundary with Guizhou , in Oct. 1998 and March, 1999. The activity is scheduled for 45 days. Morphologically, the expedition region is called as karst slope transition zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Guangxi Lowland, with remarkable relief, high mountain and deep gorges. The general altitude is about 1000~2000m, and the lowest is 400m, the relative one is between 400m to 600m. In the region karst is well developed, and there are various karst morphology, sharp and massed stone peaks, deep and steep depressions, deep river valley and, well-developed caves and shafts . Bailang Cave System, composed of subterranean rivers ,shafts, and sinkholes,etc, is situated in this area , in which the depth of shaft reaches 100~300m. So it is a quite ideal place for caving.
