DATE AND VENUE
The Symposium will be held 13-17 September,1994 at Oxford University and 17-23 September, 1994 at the University of Huddersfield.
Department of Geographical & Environmental Sciences, the University of Huddersfield and the School of Geography, the University of Oxford.
SPPORTED BY IGCP 299:
the International Association of Hydrogeologists (karst Commission); and the International Geographical Union (Commission on Environmental Changes and Conservation in Karst Areas), British Cave Research Association; the International Speleological Union (U.I.S.); Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology, the University of Reading and the Department of Geography, the University of Durham.
PURPOSE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Karst environments are particularly complex and fragile and their study involves a wide range of scientists. In no other environment do the skills of the geomorphologeologist, geologist, hydrologist and hydrogeologist overlap to such a marked extent. The presence of caves which provide access to active and relict a quifers is a unique feature of karst environments and speleologists can provide invaluable insights to hydrogeological studies. Despite these obvious areas of overlap karst scientists have too often worked in isolation from each other, remaining within subject boundaries.
The purpose of this Symposium is to bring together scientists form all of the major international groups who have a concern for the hydrogeology and geomorphology of karst environments and for the conservation of these environments.
Date: 10-11 April, 1994
Venue: Hanoi, Vietnam.

The main objective of the Round Table on Tropical Karst is to gather all specialists who have worked in such a karst and own related in formation and scientific results in order to exchange criteria, experiences and methodologies in an appropriate framework, and to discuss and publish such results. Also, GITCEK - founded in April 1992- will hold jointly its 2nd meeting. Its main purposes will be: 1) to review the two-year results, 2) to enhance its scope, and 3) to draw u p guidelines for the forthcoming two years.
The Organizing Committee is pleased to invite you to attend both scientific events and to submit your ideas, suggestions and papers. Please complete and ret urn the accompanying questionnaire as soon as possible to the Secretariat.
Such events will take place in the middle of the tropical tower kars t at Sierra de los Organos, Pinar del Rio Province, and will consist of paper sessions, thematic lectures, working meetings, video and slide sessions, as well as field trips to different seasonally wet tropical karst locations of weatern Cuba (cone and tower karst in the mountain ranges Los Organos and Rosario, and covered karst in the southern Pinar del Rio Plain). Moreover, post-event excursions will be organized to the karst of coastal plains and hilly lands in central and souther n Havana and Havana City Province and to those of coastal plains and wetlands on karst in Zapata Swamp, southern Matanzas Province.
FORESEEN THEMATIC SECTIONS:
* Hydrology, hydrochemistry and dynamics of karst processes in tropical conditions.
* Experimental catchment areas and systematic observation networks. Methodologies and instrumentation.
* Hydrological and hydrochemical time series processing and analysis.
* Environmental change and conservation in karstic areas.
* Natural and human-induced processes in karstic areas.
